Hi Gerald,

Not one of the trace logs seems to contain the PPTP trace. That’s the first
thing I have checked.

Well, maybe a network trace is the only ‘good’ solution…

Thanks,

Stefaan

Well,

If nothing shows up in the ppp.log, that would be indicative of PPTP not being
established. Then there are also the event logs to look through.

Have you tried looking through any of the trace logs you can get from ras by
enabling tracing for all components? If you haven't, it's worth a peek, if for
no other reason than to validate your assumption that nothing helpful will be
there.

Also, not being able to find something on Google either means different key
words need to be used, the information for which you're looking isn't published
there (usually means you have to talk directly to vendor), or the lack of an
answer indicates a negative answer.

You may be asking a question similar to: How can you make Kool Aid without
water?

The answer really is you can't and water is a requirement.

You may need to go back to the server admin and tell them a network trace is
required. *shrug*

Who knows, though... It's always possible that someone on the list might yet
know - waiting is probably still an okay option.

Hi Gerald,

I'm just looking for another method but a NetMon trace to easily collect some
hard evidence that some sharing/NAT devices breaks PPTP VPN connections.
Therefore we have to analyze the PPTP negotiation itself and in particular
check out if those sharing/NAT devices properly handle the CALL ID's. In fact,
a similar method as the Oakley log for L2TP/IPSec would be great.

BTW --- Google doesn't give the answer I'm looking for ;-)

Thanks,
Stefaan

I assumed you were having issues with connectivity and asking for ways to
troubleshoot them.

What is your objective here? To troubleshoot an issue? Or are you simply
asking a yes or no question (i.e., is it possible to trace a pptp negotiation,
exposing the call id negotiation natively in Windows using netsh)?

If the latter, my guess would be no, but then I'm not sitting in front of a
server running RRAS. Try using netsh ras show tracing for a list of components
and see if anything related to PPTP is listed.

Otherwise, I'm thinking a Google (Ahem, Desktop Live) search is probably
justified.

Gerald,

I do *not* want the PPP trace but the PPTP trace! The PPTP stuff itself is
happening *before* the PPP negotiation starts ;-)

Best Regards,
Stefaan

Stefaan,

Try the catchall version of that command:

netsh ras set tracing * enable

Then run your test again. Once complete - and assuming the problem was
experienced, disable tracing:

netsh ras set tracing * disable

Take a look at the log files in %windir%\tracing.

You may need to engage the MS RRAS team to further determine any underlying
cause of your problem. Based on current posts to
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing, they seem a pretty active
bunch.

Specifically, though, I believe the component you're looking for is just ppp.

netsh ras set tracing ppp enable/disable

After tracing ppp, you should see a ppp.log file in the above mentioned
directory.

Subject: [isapros] PPTP tracing

Hi,

Is there any way to trace the PPTP negotiation itself, particular the Call
ID negotiation, without using a Network Monitor on Windows XP, 2003 and
Vista?
I've looked at the "netsh ras set tracing Component enabled" command, but
it's unclear which component should be enabled or if it is possible at all.

Thanks,
Stefaan
