I have it setup so it actually sends alert to my own mail server which is
hosted on isp not the local exchange server

Here's a thought; if the ISA services fail and your mail server is behind
ISA, how is the alert mail going to be sent?
ISA is not a magic bean; it depends on the user to deploy and configure it
properly.
It's is entirely possible (though less likely than with ISA 2000) to deploy
ISA 2004 so that it's open to the world.

the service is up.

No; if the ISA service fail, ISA goes into "network brick" mode.
Nothing comes in or goes out.

Maybe I didn't explain properly. As ISA goes down, well automatically packet
forwarding and filtering becomes disabled and makes the connection between
machine network cards dead which is a good thing.
But what will happen to the ISA machine which is still having a live IP
address with a failed firewall protection on it? I believe that is a mess,
right?

Hello
I am concerned if something goes wrong and I don't get access to
machine. As an example if firewalls service goes done for any reason,
what will happen to connection? Is it going to cut all connections or it
becomes an unprotected connection?
When you install ISA it automatically disabled windows built in firewall
I have. So in that case if something goes wrong then the internet faced
network card becomes unprotected, right?
