The best approach is if you have a new box to put your ISA 2004 firewall
on. That way you can have them set up side-by-side and configure the
rules on the new box while the old box is still working. If you've got a
spare public IP address, you can even have both in production as you go.
It worked for me, anyway.

Hi Fereydoon,

You have two options:

1. Use the upgrade tool that comes with the new ISA firewall (I don't
recommend, but it works at least half the time)

2. Document your current firewall rulebase. That is to say, write down
the rules in natural language and replicate the configuration on the new
ISA firewall.

The 2004 ISA firewall works very differently thatn 2000, so I don't
recommend just installing it and hoping it works. Its a lot more like
Check Point NG than ISA 2000.

Thank you for your advice, Tom.

Would you please give a little more step by step and details of what to
save or back up from my old ISA? I have been away from administering
ISA for some time now. I need info like how to save policies, etc... I
have an Exchange server behind ISA. What do I need to save from my old
ISA?

Thanks

Hi Fereydoon,

You can do that. But I recommend that you inventory your firewall policy
and recreate on the new ISA firewall, as the new firewall model is quite
different from the 2000 model.

Hi,

I send an e-mail last week regarding upgrading my ISA 2000 to ISA 2004.
I am going to have new hardware and software, going from Windows 2000 to
2003 also.

I have not received any responses yet. Please let me know what I need
to save from my old box, as I want to name the new server the same as
the old one.

Thanks
