I can type in a FQDN where right next to it is a browse button.
However, when selecting the browse button the pop window shows WORKGROUP
grayed out as the domain, with no machines below it to select. I'm not
sure if this is why my machines don't always see a FQDN or not, when
pinging or setting up web publishing rules.
All machines in the DMZ are in WORKGROUP.

Maybe ISA flakes out.

That's an interesting statement.
Which FQDN does ISA not understand? DMZ? Internet? LAT?

I've tried trusting no one Mulder, but, but, ok. Currently they are all
just WORKGROUP and seem to be working. I just wanted the external isa
to understand FQDN's and it doesn't right now because it's not part of a
domain.

If they need to be in a domain, let that domain live totally in the DMZ
and
have no trusts anywhere else.

None of my computers in the DMZ belong to a domain and I can still ping
them and basically get out to the internet etc. Is it ok to not have
computers in the DMZ belong to a domain?

No it doesn't and that's part of the problem. If a Windows server can't
resolve the domain name through either DNS or WINS, it can't join the
domain.

You're trying to establish trust from a W2K domain to an NT4 domain?
If so,
    1. does the W2K DC have the correct WINS entries?
    2. can you "ping domainname" successfully? If not, name resolution
isn't all you believe it is.
    3. do you have DNS for the NT4 domain? W2K prefers DNS to WINS for
domain resolution.

a bit off topic.

I have users from a remote location that have an nt4 domain, this
location a have a 2000 domain. I have replicated wins and name
resolution is working fine but when I try and set up trust or log in to
that domain from this one it says it cant find a domain controller. any
ideas? have tried lmhosts
