Indeed- for those interested, here are the WINS requirements for SMS
2003 
(still in beta):

For SMS 2003, you can only disable browsing and if SMS is in Advanced
Security mode, and all of your SMS clients are running the Advanced
Client.
The prerequisites for these consist of all of the following:
Active Directory is implemented in your environment
The Active Directory schema has been extended for SMS
All SMS clients are running Windows 2000 or later

SMS 2003 requires WINS if any one of the following is true:
SMS is running in Standard Security mode
Some SMS clients are running the Standard Client
The Active Directory schema has not been extended for SMS
