http://www.ISAserver.org ------------------------------------------------------- Yes, there are details about forcing a GPO to re-install that I didn't describe because they weren't the focus of the question I had. I guess a little more explanation is necessary... The only updates I've seen to the FWC in the mspclnt folder over the last couple of years were installed by Service Pack or complete ISA version upgrade. This was a slightly different scenario in that a new version of the FWC was released via WSUS/KB instead of via SP. This particular version is the only one supported by Vista, so it is a reasonably important upgrade, but all I had was an install file for a local machine. I managed to extract the files from the install file, and was wondering if I could use those same files to upgrade the FWC installed via GPO. A bit of testing shows that does indeed work. My apologies for confusing you... -----Original Message----- From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Harrison Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 7:01 PM To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: Vista Firewall Client http://www.ISAserver.org ------------------------------------------------------- That's exactly the point. Remember the process t install the FWC over an existing installation? That hasn't changed. Thus, simply replacing the files in your GP share isn't going to update the current bits. ------------------------------------------------------- Jim Harrison MCP(NT4, W2K), A+, Network+, PCG http://isaserver.org/Jim_Harrison/ http://isatools.org Read the help / books / articles! ------------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ball, Dan Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 12:21 To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: Vista Firewall Client http://www.ISAserver.org ------------------------------------------------------- I've really got to learn to phrase my questions better... I've been doing the techniques in those links for years now. What I was mainly wondering if there was a difference between the file(s) downloaded via that KB article and the files in the mspclnt folder (other than a newer version). They have the same names, so I tested them and they seem to be working good. I updated the GPO with the new version so new computers will get the updated version, so far so good. -----Original Message----- From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Jim Harrison Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 2:58 PM To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: Vista Firewall Client http://www.ISAserver.org ------------------------------------------------------- You really should try to follow instructions: http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/Windows_2000_Software_Management_Auto matic_Installation_Options_for_Firewall_Clients.html http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838122 http://www.microsoft.com/technet/isa/2004/plan/troubleshooting_fwc.mspx http://www.microsoft.com/technet/isa/2006/firewall_client_share.mspx ------------------------------------------------------- Jim Harrison MCP(NT4, W2K), A+, Network+, PCG http://isaserver.org/Jim_Harrison/ http://isatools.org Read the help / books / articles! ------------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ball, Dan Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 05:32 To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: Vista Firewall Client As a follow-up to this, I downloaded the client referenced in the KB article, and extracted the files. It contains two files, MS_FWC.MSI and SETUP.EXE, which match the two in the mspclnt folder on the ISA server. Since my installations are via GPO, I'm going to overwrite those two files in the mspclnt directory with the new versions and push out the GPO again. If there is any reason NOT to do this, let me know... ________________________________ From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ball, Dan Sent: Wednesday, December 13, 2006 7:58 AM To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Vista Firewall Client Saw an update on my WSUS server about a Firewall client update for Vista, so tracked down the KB article about it... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929556 All mail to and from this domain is GFI-scanned. ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/isalist/ ISA Server Newsletter: http://www.isaserver.org/pages/newsletter.asp ISA Server Articles and Tutorials: http://www.isaserver.org/articles_tutorials/ ISA Server Blogs: http://blogs.isaserver.org/ ------------------------------------------------------ Visit TechGenix.com for more information about our other sites: http://www.techgenix.com ------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe visit http://www.isaserver.org/pages/isalist.asp Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/isalist/ ISA Server Newsletter: http://www.isaserver.org/pages/newsletter.asp ISA Server Articles and Tutorials: http://www.isaserver.org/articles_tutorials/ ISA Server Blogs: http://blogs.isaserver.org/ ------------------------------------------------------ Visit TechGenix.com for more information about our other sites: http://www.techgenix.com ------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe visit http://www.isaserver.org/pages/isalist.asp Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx All mail to and from this domain is GFI-scanned. ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/isalist/ ISA Server Newsletter: http://www.isaserver.org/pages/newsletter.asp ISA Server Articles and Tutorials: http://www.isaserver.org/articles_tutorials/ ISA Server Blogs: http://blogs.isaserver.org/ ------------------------------------------------------ Visit TechGenix.com for more information about our other sites: http://www.techgenix.com ------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe visit http://www.isaserver.org/pages/isalist.asp Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ------------------------------------------------------ List Archives: //www.freelists.org/archives/isalist/ ISA Server Newsletter: http://www.isaserver.org/pages/newsletter.asp ISA Server Articles and Tutorials: http://www.isaserver.org/articles_tutorials/ ISA Server Blogs: http://blogs.isaserver.org/ ------------------------------------------------------ Visit TechGenix.com for more information about our other sites: http://www.techgenix.com ------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe visit http://www.isaserver.org/pages/isalist.asp Report abuse to listadmin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx
