Per Microsoft engineers: The standard edition can be load balanced using NLB or other hardware, load-balancers such as a Big IP F5. Enterprise edition gets you a "centralized" control console and a few other goodies. But from a strict, load balancing perspective - stand alone version works fine. Your description below sounded like a "hot-failover" implementation. That I am not sure how to do. Load balancing, however is fairly easy to implement and will provide continuous service if one unit dies. Thank you.
