Another thing to remember is that many companies (like yours) simply cannot keep all deployments of a given product “current.” I’m sure you guys have both ISA 2004 and 2006 deployed somewhere (probably because you had an AWESOME boss at some point who showed you how to use it, I’m guessing). Even if you don’t I know of others that do, and they can’t or won’t change because of reasons x, y, and z. Software Assurance allows you the flexibility to apply software solutions to your environment. In some cases, it even allows you move from a “standard” versions to a “pro” edition of the same version, depending on your licensing. SA is a cash cow, and in many cases “money for nothing” afa the customer is concerned. Paying customers normally win those kinds of arguments, PARTICULARLY when it is something so logically obvious, and publically confirmed. They wouldn’t know you had 2004 installed anyway. Time to call this one “beaten to death.” t From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of John Wilson Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 11:44 AM To: ISA Mailing List Cc: ISA Mailing List Subject: [isalist] Re: TMG Release So here's what I don't get... If the liscensing folks and the web documentation doesn't agree, what is the customer ENTITLED to? I mean, does MIcrosoft have to honor what is in writing on the site, or do they have one of those clauses in the liscence that states it may change at any time, etc.,etc.? I guess that's the real crux of the issue. John Wilson Sent from my iPhone On Sep 14, 2009, at 1:12 PM, Jim Harrison <Jim@xxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:Jim@xxxxxxxxxxxx>> wrote: ..hardly. I've had discussions with several customers that think SA for one product morphs into another automagically. FWIW, I've pinged the licensing folks. They're the ones that have been saying "free upgrade from ISA 2006 only". It wouldn't be the first time a web page was "mistaken". ________________________________ From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> [isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Joe Pochedley [Joe.Pochedley@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, September 14, 2009 7:53 AM To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [isalist] Re: TMG Release I have to concur with Steve… So long as you have an “active SA” for a product line, then you’re eligible to upgrade to the latest version of the product. As soon as your SA is not renewed (becomes inactive), then you lose your upgrade rights. So, if you had an active SA on ISA 2006, but that SA expires and is not renewed prior to TMG release, then you’re not entitled to TMG. If you have an active SA for ISA at TMG’s release, and you’re still (for some god awful reason) running ISA 2000, you still have a valid license to TMG… Since an active SA also grants product downgrade rights, I don’t see why MS would care whether a company is running ISA 2004 or 2006… So long as the SA is active. (which means Microsoft is getting their money!) Now, there’s of course a question on whether you need to exercise the SA right to upgrade before the SA expires (should you decided to let an SA expire). But that’s a whole other topic for another day.
