What can I say? The decision to go with .local was made nearly four
years ago. I had just started, and the decision was made by someone
else... If we were creating our domain now, I wouldn't do it.

..local is the worst kind of evil.
If you didn't use .local ypu would be a free man. .local is a chain
that binds

Actually, this is going to cause you problems, since the hosts file is
used before any DNS or WINS query.
You'll have to ensure that the FQDN is listed twice in the hosts file;
once with the internal IP and once with the external IP.

This is one of the reasons why ".local" is evil...

The (non)existence of an extension is irrelevant.
All you have to do is copy the file from a share to the
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Actually, I don't need someone to write it for me. At this point I'm
just interested in knowing how to script the editing of an extensionless
file (the Hosts file).

It looks like Rob wants someone who knows how to write the script and
write it for him.

Rob, I'll do it for you if I know how to write it but I don't. Sorry!!!

Well, they way I would do it would be a clunky xcopy with force
overwrite and run quite so I am sure there are better ways.

However, being that this is largely a static problem, meaning that the
external client you are trying to get connected stays external, (in
other words not a laptop that moves in and out) why not use a simple
xcopy script?
