The (non)existence of an extension is irrelevant.
All you have to do is copy the file from a share to the 
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc folder.

Actually, I don't need someone to write it for me. At this point I'm just 
interested in knowing how to script the editing of an extensionless file (the 
Hosts file).

Well, they way I would do it would be a clunky xcopy with force overwrite and 
run quite so I am sure there are better ways.

However, being that this is largely a static problem, meaning that the external 
client you are trying to get connected stays external, (in other words not a 
laptop that moves in and out) why not use a simple xcopy script?
