Yep, very good points all around.

The problem I was trying to illustrate was even more vague; individual
"perception" of the term "session".
Joe User has multiple browser windows open to many sites and he wants all these
to fall into the context of "one session" (his).

This is the context I get the most questions about <sigh>.

Hi Thomas,

Yup, I was just pointing out that sessions and connection id's are not
the same as a standard session or connection to a web server or an Sql
server. I think that the naming conventions need to be changed that will
differentiate the difference in meanings with sessions.

Hi Joseph,

Yes, but this is for layer 4 sessions for TCP and layer 4
"pseudo-sessions" for UDP, if I understand these fields correctly.

Hi All,

When you look at the
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/isa/isa
logfields_8okz.asp
The following sections describe the ISA terms for session and
connections:

26 Session ID (sessionid) This identifies a session's connections. For
Firewall clients, each process that connects through the Firewall
service initiates a session. For secure network address translation
(SecureNAT) clients, a single session is opened for all the connections
that originate from the same IP address. This field is not included in
the Web Proxy service log. This field applies only to the Firewall
service log.

27 Connection ID (connectionid) This identifies entries that belong to
the same socket. Outbound TCP usually has two entries for each
connection: when the connection is established and when the connection
is terminated. UDP usually has two entries for each remote address. This
field is not included in the Web Proxy service log. This field applies
only to the Firewall service log.

ISA doesn't have any way to do that.
"Session" is a nebulous term anyway. What constitutes a session at the
application layer is something entirely different from what many folks
believe to be a "session".
