Second IP on internal interface

I have this problem where certain programs can not work if the outgoing
interface is forcing authentication using either plain text or
integrated authentication.

So I was going to add a second IP address to the internal interface and
enable only basic authentication on that.

The problem I have is that when I add the second IP address the firewall
service will only run for a few minutes before it crashes.

Is this possible, or will I need to add another network card to get this
to work?

Thanks

Stephen.
