SQL 2005 Express is the replacement for MSDE.

I'm not if it is "officially", but several software packages I see are using it 
already to replace MSDE.  Since MSDE was a scaled down version of SQL 2000, it 
makes sense that it is the new version...

Oh, and it does seem backwards compatible, I installed it on one server as a 
test, and it is reading/writing to a database created in MSDE just fine.  From 
SQL Enterprise manager, it appears to be just the same, can't tell the 
difference without really looking...

And do count me in. Visual Studio 2005 Express for free was something I could 
not refuse.

Is SQL 2005 express the new MSDBE, just to clarify things?
This makes me wish it was backwards compatible...

I wasn't planning on installing it, just wanted to throw the issue out there 
because there are a lot of people downloading it now that it is released...

Maybe, but it won't be part of any update package. 
Don't install it on your ISA yet.
