Well, I've verified that this problem is WMPlayer.
If you open it, hit <CTRL>-U and enter the first URL, you get the auth
prompt.
Apparently, WMP doesn't really "get" the idea of "integrated auth".

Exactly why it behaves this way is not clear.
I'll as the WMP folks and see what silliness they offer in return...

It's more like application tracing.
