But it doesn't reject it if you install the firewall client and the
firewall client doesn't enable support for other types of encoding. So
what's else could it be?

Actually, it's very clear - the response can't get past the HTTP Filter:
"Blocked by the HTTP security filter: the response content is encoded
and cannot be scanned."

ISA 2004 SP2 only supports GZip encoding.  If the server responds with
any other form, ISA will drop it.

I think it might be a coincidence, unless the firewall client is
enabling a Direct Access entry for you.

Proxy 502 error: The request was rejected by the HTTP filter. (12217)

I found that the PC in question did not have the firewall client
installed. Installing it resolves the issue but I don't understand why.
How does the firewall client change the http filter result?
