2. Make sure the IE settings are cleared.

This means no proxy settings at all; auto, "this proxy" or anything of that
nature.

1) Only found the wpad.dat inside Inetpub/wwwroot
2) my SBS IE had a proxy setup instead of config script.

Same error as before.. so any other ideas?

Try this at the SBS server:
1. open a cmd window and type "del \wpad[*.dat /s" (no quotes)
2. Make sure the IE settings are cleared.

I don't know what i'm looking at, but AFAIK they look clear?

This "Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive" is significant.
The request should not be made using a proxy request.
Get your hands on proxycfg.exe and make sure the WinHTTP proxy settings are
cleared.

Nope, that's the whole message, so i assume something is being returned as null
or an empty string.

Since it's SBS, Sharepoint is installed on the Default Web Site. I don't
remember changing anything else, but I have had programs that made their own
App Pool before.

The TempFile.txt that TestAutoConfig,vbs says:

That error "Failed to get the ISA auto-configuration data; Details:" indicates
that the script failed to function as designed.
What is the remainder of the error?
Have you customized the default website in *any* way outside of the package
instructions?

I'm testing http://wpad/wpad.dat from my workstation.

DNS works, the URL's don't (as per error below), and FWC autodetect can't find
anything either.

Where are you trying your verification from? Not the server I hope?

Yep, pretty much what I did:

1) Extracted the 3 files to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot

2) In IIS, remove Read access to the two dat's, setup 403.2 error redirection
to /wxpad.asp and verified Deny All except from 192.168.100.0 / 255.255.255.0
(yes our 3rd octet is 100); verified anonymous access

3) Did Deny All except 192.168.100.0 / 255.255.255.0 on the wxpad.asp file and
made sure anonymous access is allowed. Never edited the file.

And you edited and set the permissions on all 3 files?

You need the SBS specific wpad file.

Hi,

I'm just getting around for setting up WPAD as I'm SBS 2003 Premium.

Anyways, i've followed the instruction set and when i go to
http://wpad/wpad.dat it returns "Failed to get the ISA auto-configuration data;
Details:" .

So this tells me:

a) My DNS works as it resolves

b) My *.dat config works, as read access is off and its redirecting me to the
.asp which is returning the error.

My proxy web listener runs on 8080 (default), so i didnt edit the file.

Any ideas?

When I created the A record, i did get this error:

"Warning: The associated pointer (PTR) record cannot be created, probably
because the reference reverse lookup zone cannot be found."
