I actually listen to all kinds of music. Never know when you find a cool lick or some other phrase that you can borrow. Yngwie was just an electronic Mozart.. However he played lots of Russian composers. Moberta Mack? Actually, the way I think about it anyway, they have a pretty strong musical relationship. Culturally, they are *very* different, though. Roberta's first album (First Take, 1969) really pushed the envelope. For a young black woman to come and sing about social reform the way she did ("Hey that's no way to say goodbye," "Our Ages or our Hearts,"Compared to What," etc) as a mainstream debut in 1969 totally earned my respect. That combined with her raw jazz piano, earthy voice and contemplative lyric just blows me away. Of course, I was just pushing 4 at the time ;) I bet Tom has sat 'round the old turntable with a scotch and a cigar listening to that album before. I think Moby has many of the same qualities on the music side-- he starts with slow, methodic chord structure and builds in complex accompaniments while making it "easy" to listen to. Pretty talented dude, actually. His ambient stuff rocks (oxymoron aside) and his techno-jazz obviously has classical roots. They both push my emotional buttons- Moby does it with music, Roberta with lyric. t ----- Original Message ----- From: "Amy Babinchak" <amy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: "[ISAserver.org Discussion List]" <isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2005 6:24 AM Subject: [isalist] RE: OT: Music http://www.ISAserver.org Never thought I'd see Moby and Roberta Flack mentioned on the same page. Sorry, I've been trapped inside for the last several days with no corkscrew-- It was horrible-- I had to live off of food and water for days. Van Halen ROCKS! I lost my hearing to Eddie, thank you very much, but then again, I was in High School when their first album hit the streets. It's a culture thing. I don't listen to too much Tina, but if you don't get choked up by Roxette's "Spending my Time," then you sir, have not truly loved and lost! And I'll have you know that Enya is an absolutely fantastic artist (as are her siblings like Maire Brennan of Clannad). Being Scotch Irish, I find her music quite stirring, even if she takes from some of the darker Gregorian chants. In fact, I based the synth backer of a song I wrote called "Jewel" (posted on HoG) after that sound. A few of my old students and friends used to say "how can I remember, let alone practise all those scales". Point was when I showed them how they were all based on relatively the same patterns whilst changing the point of reference (root note) they became not as difficult. I'm amazed at the amount of people who complicate modes so much.. Having said that with chords I generally work out the structure of the chord ie 1-b3-b5 and change the root note. That way I remember the formulas which I find from remembering the numbers I can see the appegio and scale within the chord at the same time. It simplifies the neck for me :) Of course ive done it so many times I know most of them without needing to think of the formulas, but it was a great way to learn it. Guitar teacher friend of mine, teched and played on Steve Vai's Fire Garden tour, so I had a little help there !! :P Greg Mulholland Clear IT Level 10, 530 Little Collins Street Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 99097411 Fax: (03) 99097091 -----Original Message----- From: Quillman Shawn (RBNA/CSA1) * [mailto:Shawn.Quillman@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, 12 July 2005 4:14 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: Amazon.com: Books: Dr. Tom Shinder's Configuring ISA Server 2004 http://www.ISAserver.org Actually we have 54 if you include just the standard major, 3 forms of minor, the modes, pentatonic and 12-tone.
