Oh, it's better to capture everything then filter post. Unless you know exactly what you are looking for. -----Original Message----- From: TRadtke@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:TRadtke@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2005 10:27 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: OT: Ethereal http://www.ISAserver.org I'd wait till you have the issue happening. Fire it up and let it run for 5 minutes. Check your network usage then per computer and you'll probably have the problem child system. There are lots of things you can do with it. Unfortunately since the drive died on my laptop I don't have it installed anymore to give you any guidance. Downloading a 6gb file right now, so I can't reboot at all. -----Original Message----- From: Amy Babinchak [mailto:amy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, January 06, 2005 10:23 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] OT: Ethereal http://www.ISAserver.org I've seen this tool recommended here more than once so I'm giving it a try. The problem is that looking at packets isn't my thing. I've made a test capture this morning. (it's a snow day here in Michigan so network traffic is down today) Now I need to know how to read it. I see that there is more traffic for 2 machines than for the rest. I see that certain types of traffic are more prevalent than others. What I don't know is how to identify a problem. I'm looking for something that is hogging the LAN bandwidth. When a few computers are active everything runs smoothly. When a bunch are on, there are issues, like can't get to some websites, can't browse the network, trouble saving files, etc. I see that the server nic is incredibly busy - the nic statistics showed 8 times more traffic in 5 hours than an identical server in another office at the same company recorded in 13 days. My first capture with no filters applied yielded a whole bunch of stuff that I know need to know whether or not to be concerned about. Is there a doc out there that provides an easy lookup? Finally, is there more appropriate list for this question?
