The templates are for the folks who deploy a "typical" ISA and just want to "do it the easy way". For those with a semblance of a clue, they're just noise. ------------------------------------------------------- Jim Harrison MCP(NT4, W2K), A+, Network+, PCG http://isaserver.org/Jim_Harrison/ http://isatools.org Read the help / books / articles! ------------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: Ball, Dan [mailto:DBall@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, August 09, 2005 10:38 To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: NLB on ISA 2004 http://www.ISAserver.org So why would you need the templates then if you don't use them until you already know how to set up the ISA server? Templates are intended for quick setups and beginners to make sure you don't miss anything. I used the templates on my first few test boxes until I learned what they were doing, and then when I finally set up my production unit I just chose the template that most closely matched my setup. Not because I wanted the pre-made rules it created, but just for the picture, even though it doesn't even match my layout. I know, I know, it doesn't really matter, it's just a cosmetic thing... Just putting my 1.5 cents worth in on design critique. -----Original Message----- From: JosephK [mailto:josephk@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, August 09, 2005 12:37 PM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: NLB on ISA 2004 http://www.ISAserver.org I actually think that besides the pretty graphic you should not use the templates until you know how to setup your ISA box. I took the advice of others on this list and did not use the templates until I knew what I wanted to setup and establish! I'm glad that I did not use the templates. Took just a short time longer and I learned a ton about rules and setting up my ISA boxes. Using that line of reasoning, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the Single NIC template and then add additional networks afterwards... The picture might not match your layout, but who cares? (Heck, mine shows a three-leg network when I have five!) Actually, this seems like a dangerous feature (to me, anyways) in that someone could click on a template and promptly wipe out your whole setup. Too much happens with only two-three clicks. ________________________________ From: Thomas W Shinder [mailto:tshinder@xxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, August 09, 2005 9:58 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] RE: NLB on ISA 2004 http://www.ISAserver.org Hi Alex, No, but you don't need to use that template. You just need to remove the addresses used for the intra-array network from the definition of the default Internal Network.
