Linux in the DMZ

I have Linux in the DMZ .He is listening to SMTP 25.I open telnet 25  to
the linux I have rely slow response and time outs!
 I have packet filtering with local and remouth IPs opened SMTP in both
direction role!A If it's good think to do and why a respond is so slow???
