At least I don't call with easy questions! I'll know tomorrow for sure but apparently the install was unable to create the MSDE instance because the performance counters were corrupt. Oddly, they worked in the corrupt state but new ones couldn't be added. I'm going to re-try the ISA install tomorrow evening but I'm very optimistic that this will have resolved the problem. These are the more detailed component installation logs and may help sort this out. I don't' see anything here that suggests a registry permissions problem; how do you come to that? 0x80040005 is a generic "catch-all" failure code, so it's not very helpful until we "drill down" a bit further. This KB query produces a few hits that may help you until then: http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?qu=0x80040005 -----Original Message----- From: Amy Babinchak [mailto:amy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2005 5:15 AM To: [ISAserver.org Discussion List] Subject: [isalist] In which Amy spends 5+ hours on the phone with PSS and ISA2004 still isn't installed... http://www.ISAserver.org I don't get it. This server was humming along with no visible problems, everything was going smoothly and right on schedule until I got to the ISA2004 install. I was doing the SBS SP1 installation which normally takes about 4 hours. The process includes an upgrade from ISA2000 to ISA2004. About 1/2 way through the upgrade bombs and the server reboots. The server doesn't blue screen, the installation wizard bombs out and the server reboots normally as if an invisible hand selected yes, reboot now. There are no events logged. Filemon captures info but we don't have an opportunity to save it. There is no third party software running; no non- Microsoft services enabled; nothing in startup enabled. Dell Open Manage and APC were uninstalled prior to the SP1 installation. This is not an OEM install. Tried the installation in safe mode with networking. Tried reinstalling ISA2000 and then running the ISA2004 upgrade again. Tried installation ISA2004 without ISA2000 on the server. PSS verified that the SBS SP1 component did finish successfully. The installation log shows: 0x80004005 "The wizard cannot install ISA Server 2004. Try to install it again by restarting this wizard. If the problem persists, see http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/support for additional help and support." In the ISA2004 install log it says the following about the error: SBSISA2K4SETUP: CreateProcess returned OK SBSISA2K4SETUP: ISA2k4 setup completed before post config SBSISA2K4SETUP: *** WaitingForMultipleObjects returned ERROR 0x80004005 SBSISA2K4SETUP: *** LaunchISA2k4NativeSetup returned ERROR 0x80004005 SBSISA2K4SETUP: *** Running ISA2k4 setup unattended returned ERROR 0x80004005 SBSISA2K4SETUP: Entering IsISA2k4Installed IsISA2k4Installed returned FALSE SBSISA2K4SETUP: ISA2k4 is NOT installed SBSISA2K4SETUP: *** CSbsIsa2k4SetupCommit::CommitEx returned ERROR 0x80004005 SBSISA2K4SETUP: *** CommitEx returned ERROR 0x80004005 SBSISA2K4SETUP: Committer failed SBSISA2K4SETUP: (error message is generic.) But I and PSS are looking for some way to fix it. Meanwhile I've reinstalled ISA2000 for my client. I won't be on site again until Wednesday evening. Meanwhile, I'm looking for suggestions.
