By soft-appliance I mean you buy the hardware and the vendor supplies a ISO image pre-built with the application/OS. Looking at the lifecycle for TMG: Forefront Threat Management Gateway 2010 Enterprise Mainstream support ends: 4/14/2015 Extended support ends: 4/14/2020 John ________________________________ From: isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:isalist-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rob Moore Sent: 09 May 2013 14:31 To: isalist@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [isalist] Re: ISA replacement I'm not sure what you mean by "soft-appliance or a full on firewall." It's a hardware appliance with their software built into it. They have many different models that do a variety of different things. You buy the model that you need-with or without wireless, the number of physical ports you need, the amount of processing power you need depending on bandwidth and devices that will be using it, etc. You then pay for different kinds of network protection-AV, intrusion detection, etc. Their support seems to be pretty good-I've had a couple of minor problems, mainly because of my lack of understanding of the interface (quite different from TMG), and they helped me fix them quickly. You have to have a contract for support or they won't help you. But, since I've paid for support in advance, I'm much less reluctant to call them than I am with Microsoft (where it costs me $259 per call). As far as TMG support goes, without looking at the MS support site, my recollection is that they will continue to support TMG for at least a couple more years. They won't be releasing any new versions or major updates, though. Someone can feel free to correct me on this, if so inclined. I thought MS had stopped supporting TMG? So far we have implemented one on a wireless network with multiple wireless access points. I like it and we'll probably go with a larger implementation, but haven't done it yet. We're not rushing to replace our TMG firewalls yet, since the hardware is relatively new and Microsoft is still supporting TMG. We still have a pair of ISA servers and have had a few issues with them recently to the point its time to replace them.
