and let the ISA do its job on the stuff that it needs to

I was under the impression that you were going to hook up the ISA to a
separate IP next to the firewall.
If you wish to link them, I would say, start with the PIX (as mentioned
below, hardware based, etc) and then let the ISA server handle the more
intelligent tasks.
