NO.
Don't
Do
That.

ISA installs MSDE with the appropriate updates and patches.
We hit a snag with teh SLammer fix in teh ISA environment and the SQL folks had
to give us a "special" patch that we install during setup.

If / when the SQL team issues a patch, look for a statement of compatability
from the ISA team.

Also, MSDE just like the rest of the SQL products needs to have SP3 for
SQL(MSDE) installed.
I'm not sure what version that ISA 2004 installs. I've not yet put 2004
onto any box.
I will do so soon. MSDE 2000 supports up to 2 gigabytes (GB) per
database. This limitation is per database, not per server. A single
computer can support multiple MSDE 2000 instances, each with databases
of up to 2 GB in capacity.
So, with the instance in question, without good management tools for
working with MSDE on ISA then the "<machinename>\msfw "
Structure could break each time the DB reaches the 2GB limit.

It's not a permanent fix; if yo log off and back on, it'll have
"forgotten". I'm looking into a more permanent fix.

This is a known, begnign and irritating problem.
1 - by default, ISA 2004 uses MSDE logging and so installs it
2 - the MSDE instance isn't properly registered with the SQL service
mangler
3 - you can work around this by entering <machinename>\msfw in teh
"server" field and hitting <TAB>

Hello,
We recently installed ISA 2004 and I noticed it installed an instance
of SQL (MSDE). I am no expert with MSDE, but we do use it for a few
other databases, not loaded on our ISA of course. My problem is that I
noticed it doesnt look like it is working. Usually the icon in the
system tray has a green arrow when it is running. Well ours just shows
the white empty circle. When I go into the MSDE manager by
double-clicking the systray icon and try to select the service running
on our ISA from the drop down list, nothing is listed for our ISA
server, but it does see/show our MSDE loaded on other servers.

Is this normal? If not any suggestions?

Thanks!
