But you did neither according to your diagram. You put it out on the
Internet unprotected.

In this case Microsoft did recommend a good solution. Put it in the DMZ. But
he did not follow that recommendation. The Front End Back End setup is the
best way to go for a number of reasons, albeit I would not use Exchange for
the Front End. Example, we host 25 domains on our Imail server which is in
the DMZ. We also have a backup mail server that is Windows 2003 server RC2.
That Windows 2003 server can be used very effectively as a Front End mail
server for a Bank End Exchange.

However, in this situation, a third party serving as the Front End would be
a more economical solution.
