Exchange Send/Receive hanging at 50%

Wondering if anyone can help me diagnose a problem where the Outlook
client will attempt to check for mail and get stuck at 50% for about a
minute or two or three before finishing. When this happens the Outlook
client hangs along with the client system. I've checked the exchange
server at times when was happening and didn't see anything related to
performance.
I'm running ISA 2000 and Exchange 2003
