I'll second that - weird things abound !! Best way is to get hold of a
removable drive bay and two carriers - you have to totally shut down, but it
is VERY safe.

Windows can dual boot, but if you are looking for a way of doing it without
a chance of messing up your current install, either way is a safe way of
doing it. Personally I've had whacky things happen with software dual
boots, regardless of Windows or OSS type boot loader.

I have the extra drive, but not an extra machine. The drives are all IDE.
I was under the impression that Windows would allow you to dual boot without
any extra products. I don't know how well that works though. And it might
be an issue if/when I decide to remove the original drive.

Here's what we do:
Image the machine with something like Symantec Ghost. Load your ISA2k4 on
the system. If you don't like it, put the machine image back down. If you
need to switch out for some reason, image the new setup and then load the
old image. To reload the ISA2k4 setup, it's simple enough just to image it
with the new system image then. Or, go with 2 drives and a physical boot
selector device, like what they have for IDE disks. I'm not sure if they
have them for SCSI since I've never had to look for one if that is what you
need.

I have been running ISA2004 in a Virtual Server session, and I am now ready
to upgrade our ISA2000 machine. Since I am not an expert at this, I want to
have the option to go back to ISA2000 temporarily if things don't go
well(!). My first thought was to simply yank the hard drive from the
ISA2000 machine and install a new one. I can start installing 2004 and if I
have to stop for a while, then I can just remove the new drive and put the
old one back in.
It occurred to me that it might make sense to install the new drive in
addition to the old one and then set up a dual boot. This would allow me to
boot to a Windows 2003 instance running ISA2004 or boot to the original
Windows 2000 instance running ISA2000. This might be somewhat easier than
moving hard drives. However, I have never installed a dual boot scenario,
so I don't know what kinds of issues I might run into.
My ultimate goal is to run only ISA2004 on this machine and remove ISA2000,
so I don't want to do anything that would make this difficult later on.
Any ideas on how to make this as easy as possible?
