Acronis has a new add-on tool for their true image called universal
restore. Take a look at it. I used a few times and worked well in my
case.

Imagining does not work too well when the hardware is dis similar.

We are looking at a situation, where it's going to be close, but not
identical, nic, raid controllers, disk mix etc will not be identical to
the
source, so an image will likely blue screen on boot.

Disk imaging is the only way to go. If you don't want to pay for
Acronis,
etc., there are plenty of freeware disk imaging products that you can
use.
