Windows also needs to be updated. And unfortunately ISA runs only on it.
So regarding updates I don't see where ISA is different.

Cisco ASA is a fine sacrificial edge device.
Let it stay there and try to absorb the unending L3 attacks so ISA can do the
heavy lifting at L4+.
Seriously; network layering is a basic premise of access control; if you feel
comfy having to manage multiple disparate devices to feel good about security,
then go fer it.
What you will (hopefully) quickly realize is that more often than not; the pain
is greater than the benefit.
The cost of Cisco maintenance far outweighs any benefits it provides (unless
you don't care to update it as required).

Yup,
1st step, go to trash can. 2nd step, raise cisco unit above trash can.
3rd step, let cisco unit fall into trash can. 4th step, leave a box of beer
out with trashcan to guarantee the trash guys take the cisco unit away.
Update ISA 2004 to ISA 2006, Buy the book.
