Hi Shawn,

I agree 100! Just was pointing out that this stuff takes time and is
fun in the process. And, because of my association on this list and
trying to be an admin when I'm a programmer! <grin>, I'm trying to learn
from the best. So, while I work on the longest started project ever...2
years now since I first installed ISA and started learning about all the
fun things and creating wonderful things for. If anyone has ideas about
what they would like to see that isn't yet available due to price please
let me know, I will do my best to create something that I can learn with
and share with the group.

I'll be done testing the last of the move and import scripts this
weekend. I've only been home for 3 months out of the last year and since
being home, I've been busily testing and creating.

Thank you all for waiting patiently!

Joseph

Hey Joseph,

I agree with you with regards to enterprise development, wasn't trying
to say that developing automation projects was comparable. Let me
qualify my comment with more of what I was thinking. In my experience
many admins simply will not make the time to learn the scripting and
automation languages. It is one of the best things I've done. I have a
slew of ISA scripts that I use to make changes to multiple standalone
machines at once, instead of having to go through the mmc for each of
them. I one day will take these and port them into VB so that there is
a gui in the mix as well. These are the $15-type shareware programs that
I'm referring to. VB makes it easy to crank them out rapidly.
Automation projects that would be beneficial to the community as a whole
are certainly worth a couple bucks to the person who took the time to
develop them.

Enterprise software, completely different story. My reference to using
automation languages like VB to learn OOP principles stays at the basics
of the concept. Working with objects in simple languages like VB
provides a decent foundation for learning how to work in full blown OOP
languages. Advanced skills in things like scalability are not as easily
acquired.

Hi Shawn,

I come from the old school where ASM and COBOL were the languages and
the PC occupied multiple buildings. Actually is was simpler then. You
would do your 9 to 5 maybe 10 - 6 and go home, unless of course you
Had the nightly duty! Now, most people have PC's and some form of
programming language. If you have The new versions of MS Office for
example you can program with VBA, doing many things. The language is
Interpreted but you're not running large enterprise apps. And, you can
distribute the MACRO'S to other Users if you want. So, yes any
shareware package indeed could be plucked out. However, when it comes
To true enterprise development I would always first use someone with
that knowledge rather then someone Who can just bang out 15$ programs.

With respect to ISA, some of the things I work with could effect how
those machines run. Being just a lone Shop now, I need to ware all the
hats to make sure that I code, test, debug, have a few people look
things over Make changes, study the results and release. If what we did
ever harmed or brought down a corporate network The damage caused would
be devastating to anyone who wrote the programs. I've been learning how
to write C++ filters For isa for a long time in addition to learning how
ISA works. It is a great tool with great potential for providing
Wonderful simple scripts all the way to labor intensive code for the
masses.

Yeah, just wait 'til you've gone through all the C++ and then need real
Java
:) I will say that, working mainly in Windows lately, teaching myself
VB was the best thing I've done in a while. Er, professionally of
course. It even makes it a lot easier to learn full OOP languages like
C++ and Java. Back that with being able to control darn near everything
on a Windows box. Another case where the advantages far outweigh the
quirks. Plus you can bang out $15 shareware packages in an hour and a
half!

OK; William has now earned himself the title of "BSME".
(BS Master Extraordinaire).
;-)

Actually, I agree with your assessment of VBScript; that, JScript and
cmd scripting have made it possible for "Joe Admin" and even "Joe User"
to write functional programs without having a CS degree. Unfortunately,
my recent tasking has dictated that I learn "real" programming, and so I
find myself taking C classes... The good part is that JScript starts to
make sense now...

"A mere VBScript"...?!?!?!?!

Nevermind the masterful techniques (which teach me MANY new things every
day!!), nor the subtle genius of the execution of the package as a
whole, but the fact that VBScript is the most essential portal ever
known to man when it comes to managing the beast called Microsoft, I
think you must be mistaken Sir!!!!

I am eternally proud to say that I know a man by name of Jim Harrison,
(oh ok, and a certain Dr S...) who share with the rest of us MERE
mortals the secrets to unlocking the Microsoft universe...blah blah
blah, sorry, I can only waffle so much nonsense in one breath.

No harm meant for the SQL Scripts comment Joe, as once quoted by Jim:
"The most eagerly anticipated script...."

I'm sure though he meant to add: "2nd only to ISAInfo of course"

Cheers guys
