Allowing inbound PING requests

I have ISA2000/w2k3. There is a server publishing rule that publishes a SMTP
server behind ISA. I wanted to ping it from internet. By default, ISA won't
allow ICMP. So, I followed an ISAserver.org article to open up ICMP query and
ICMP outbound for the IP number (x.x.x.40) on the external NIC. The ping works
fine from the internet.

My question is this: When I ping the external IP x.x.x.40, does that ping
request go to the SMTP server and a response is returned? Or, just ISA
responds to the ping request itself? I opened up the PING port on a non-used
external IP number without publishing any servers internally for that IP. I
got the PING reply. So I wonder? Thanks

NOTE: I definitely don't want to allow PING for the SMTP, but just want to find
out how ISA does the pings.

Thanks
