Hi,

This sounded quite interesting.

Fionnuala, canyou tell us how we can receive the audio description while
the programme is on air?

Do we need a digital service such as those provided by NTL or sky?

Tim

Subject: [IrelandVIPNews] Audio description on NCBI website

Dear all,
Apologies if you got this message yesterday but I didn't so I don't think it
got through.

There was a discussion recently about audio description and whether RTE were
working on it or not.

Audio description is the name given to a narrative track for blind and
vision impaired viewers of television, movies, the performing and the visual
arts.

NCBI has a three minute example of what audio description is like on our
website www.ncbi.ie. On the homepage you will find a link to the Media
Conversion Service (MCS) page and the clip is there under the headline audio
description. This example was made by our Media Conversion Service for
"About the House" - a building, architectural and renovation series
presented by Duncan Stewart, with co-presenter Angie O'Brien and produced by
Earth Horizon Productions. "About the House" is on weekly on RTÉ 1.

The Media Conversion Service provides accessible media for all and converts
information and documents into formats accessible to people with vision
impairments for a range of public and private clients.

The final episode of the last series of About the House will be repeasted on
RTE during the summer and this episode will be audio described. I'll let you
know when it will be on. The new series of About the House is still at
discussion stages but, should it go ahead, NCBI hopes to be involved.

I'd like to know what you think of the clip so please email any comments.

Regards,
Fionnuala
