Impression will always delete left, as expected.

Ah, but I didn't expect it, having always (in recent times
anyway) had the different delete options available at my
fingertips, literally.

Only early versions of Impression-X adopted PC-style
DELETE but by the latest version (5.99) either correct
or PC-style DEL key behaviour could be set as part of
the configuration.

Well, blow me down! I hadn't even noticed that option.

That still leaves the question of the smart quotes failure
in directly entered text.
