ident lookups, which might be blocked by a firewall at your end or the
isp's end, and then if the IP you are ssh'ing from doesn't have reverse
DNS (ptr record) that's another factor for delay.
Another reason might be the multiple round trips involved in authentication
(challenge-response or something like that).
