This FAQ might help you understand better, do please
GPL never insists on recognising the original author
when you modify and redistribute or distribute without
I didn't find answer why when in the GPL no credit is
given to the orginal author, you insist on GNU prefix
only for Linux.
It is common to call larger entity by some central
point e.g Indian based on Indus river, though we know
India is too large to be identified by, indus river
alone, similarly the central point being the kernel
nothing wrong in calling it by that name.
The difficulty of 'Just kernel and not the OS' can be
realised from following in the link posted
It might have been a good idea to adopt Linux as the
GNU kernel back in 1992. If we had realized, then,
how long it would take to get the GNU Hurd to work,
we might have done that. (Alas, that is hindsight.)
Actually I see mentality of 'missed the bus' in
writings on the link.
