There are also some hardware mixers available on some sound cards. For
example  the ALI  M5451  sound chipset  (linux  driver: trident.o)  on
Compaq Presario  laptops support  hardware mixing. So  I dont  run any
software sound daemons like ESD or  ARTSD. I was surprised that such a
nice feature existed.

If your card supports hardware mixing and it works with your driver, then
it is best not to run any of these daemons. They have a lot of problems
both in design and implementation. Great quote from Alan Cox: 
  "I don't know why and I'm not yet motivated to fix it since my views
  on esd are mostly unprintable."
