[Ilugc] gaim, jabber not working in firewalled environment

The problem is not with proxy.  Using ports other than 80 (to connect
remotely) is prohibited in our college campus.

I guess Yahoo messenger (for linux ot win) uses port 80 for transport
in case direct connection to YM port (55??) was not available (bcoz of
firewall).

Hope you understand my question now.

Which distro? Which gaim version? If its old, upgrade.

You don't have to set any proxy setting in GAIM. As
long as your default route goes to the proxy server,
you should be fine.

BTW, I'm wondering about making gaim work in a
firewall-enabled
environment (only port 80 is allowed).  Yahoo
messenger seems to be
using http tunnelling for transport, but jabber or
gaim/yahoo doesn't
seem to support this.

the result .. barriers for switching to open
source software (ym->gaim
for eg.) in our department.

You can't set GAIM to go through a proxy server?
