Hi Mohan,
More than anything security means understanding. If you wanted to
do a project in firewalls you need to understand OS and Networks.
So it means aganin theory.
www.counterpane.com has lot of links for good reading.
Few things you must understand is
1) security is not equal to encryption
There is one recent article which has links at

reading on this topic.
http://www.insecure.org has a good reading list on buffer overflow
etc.
I don't discourage doing firewall project. But I believe it should
be done at secondary or third level since there are many readings
to be done. It takes quite a bit of time to really understanding
which leaves you little time to do project work.

You may have looked at the pervious replies on this topic. Go through the
material/links etc pointed out there, and if you need any more specific
help, then go ahead and ask away [on the list] !!
And more than anything, make sure you start *doing* things. Go ahead and
make your mistakes and *do* things. Thats the fun part, so, don't worry too
much about the results just now.
Do let us know how you progress, so that we can keep pointing you in the
right direction. Probably keep a webpage with updates about your project,
that you can refer to in your mails and then we can use it to advice you,
whenever you ask a question on the list.
