More than anything security means understanding. If you wanted to
do a project in firewalls you need to understand OS and Networks.
So it means aganin theory.
www.counterpane.com has lot of links for good reading.
Few things you must understand is
1) security is not equal to encryption
There is one recent article which has links at
site. The peon's guide to securing your system is one of the best
reading on this topic.
http://www.insecure.org has a good reading list on buffer overflow
I don't discourage doing firewall project. But I believe it should
be done at secondary or third level since there are many readings
to be done. It takes quite a bit of time to really understanding
which leaves you little time to do project work.

Great that I can be of help to you, and sorry for the delay in responding
to you. But a request, and I am CCing this to the list, as I think this
would be helpful to others as well ?! :)
Suggestion: Keep your Linux/technical/non-technical queries on the list
rather than sending them to me personally.
1. I enjoy answering queries on this list, as and when time permits.
However, if you send me a query directly, I probably will not be able to
reply on time, and that may offend you or discourage you. However, it is
not my intention to hurt anyone.
2. Your questions would be useful to other people on the list and probably,
there are many more who may be able to help while I may be busy at that
3. We may discuss personal matters and/or off-topic issues directly and off
the list. And I would not mind that, however, my priorities may not match
yours !!! so, you may again see delays etc, which I hope you won't mind.
Now, about your query...
someone taking up such a project... wud be very happy if u can >guide me,
am a mca student, who is planning to take up firewall and its
implementation as my project, saw that u were quite enthusiastic >about
as to what i need to read or to go thru' to start with...
to... waiting for a reply
i know c & c++ and a li'l bit of python...
as such i dont have any clue about where to start or where to >go
You may have looked at the pervious replies on this topic. Go through the
material/links etc pointed out there, and if you need any more specific
help, then go ahead and ask away [on the list] !!
And more than anything, make sure you start *doing* things. Go ahead and
make your mistakes and *do* things. Thats the fun part, so, don't worry too
much about the results just now.
Do let us know how you progress, so that we can keep pointing you in the
right direction. Probably keep a webpage with updates about your project,
that you can refer to in your mails and then we can use it to advice you,
whenever you ask a question on the list.
Hope that helps !
