Did you try booting to maintanence mode and running fsck. Running
fsck on a read-write partition might damage it further. Its not
advisable. So boot to single user mode, try running fsck -y / after
remounting the root partition to read-only.
Having said this, did you search groups.google.com before posting this?

I am using the debian 3.0r2 woody.I am using ext2 file system for
linux partitions.I am not able to mount any drives i get the error
/etc/mtab :can't open for writing :input/output error
I tried using fsck -f for that disk but it reported some superblocks
lost and cleared it .
now i can't even ls that file..
