[Ilugc] color over ssh

I use putty to log in to my RH7.0 server. I've set terminal as xterm
on the ssh client. I get colours in ssh. If term is set to vt100 I
do not get colours. Further colours in ls etc is enabled with the
--color-tty option using alias. Check that also out.
I did export TERM=xterm on the solaris server. Did not work :(
I tried xterm-color and ansi-color and emacs refused to startup.
something seems wrong on the server side of things.
