I had come over to the IIT, in the first three months' of
ILUG-Chennai's formation. There was no OSS at that time. There was
only the IIT, a guy called Prabhu and another geek outside at Adayar
called Arun K.
yes, thats all fine; but that would be like calling some of our ministers
pakistani because they were born in undivided india in cities that would
later become part of pakistan. i have been a part of ilugc before ilugc
moved into iit campus. i dont believe ilugc subscribes to the idea of free
as equal to the 'ideals as conveyed by the gnu project of RMS.' i suspect
the philosophy is closer to the open source philosophy, but with over 500
members on the mailing list (and a good number of the good ones being
silent observers), it would be hard to pin it down. in fact, it would be
hard to pin anything down and say 'look, this is what ilugc is'. i believe
our ilugc is good because of its openness. we are open to anything, even
proprietary software. yes, we would like more people to use gnu stuff,
linux, X, python, perl etc etc, but we are not so fanatic as to turn out
others. we have an ulterior motive of promoting linux and thats it.
