Hi

Did this problem start after installing NISLDAP gatway. Then it could be 
nsswitch. Change username and password from nis to ldap. Actually i a 
using OpenLdap. With this i faced similar problem. In your grub use 
linux single to go to non password mode and rectify it.

passwd: files ldap
shadow: files ldap
group: files ldap
hosts: files ldap
....
how can i change username/root and passwd from nis to ldap
plz,can u explain me clearly
what is the write step to do next
(so that i can up the system)
