Dont know if this is of any help but s3 Savage cards are supported by
X 4.1.0. Just install xserver-xfree86 and when debconf asks you to
choose the card pick the appropriate one (savage is the right driver).
I think debconf does a decent job of handling the setup. No need to
fiddle with xf86config.
