Thanks for all the help. A few more things...when I make the parition
for GNU/Linux, it tells me that my disk maynot be bootable and asks me
to a boot disk (which i'll do anyway) and asks me if i want to edit the
partition or "add anyway". whats this all about? I don't want to start
a heated thread about ext2 vs. ext3, but which shall i opt for? I am
also making a 6 gig fat32 partition to share data between win2k and
gnu/linux. any comments/suggestions?

on a multi disk machine, there is only one safe and sturdy
configuration -
windows and the boot loader (grub/lilo) should be on the 'first' disk.
