Why GNOME is the default desktop environment in most of the GNU/Linux
distributions? What is the strong reason behind it?


I have tried very few desktop environments. Notably, Gnome, KDE, Unity &
XFCE.

I switched back to GNOME due to the following reasons:

1. Clean & Simple Desktop. I don't have any shortcuts on my top bar. Unless
I show, no body knows what I do !!

2. Multiple Desktops get created automatically. Need not worry on No. of
desktops (I use two normally though)

3. Top bar is not a simple task bar.. It gives the power. You can virtually
control any application from task bar (Music mainly)

4. GNOME can be tweaked as you wish..

5. Gnome provides a user experience that is drastically different from
other Linux desktop environments, Windows, and OS X. It makes you feel that
this is something new!!
