If you are running any Linux^W GNU/Linux ;) distro worth its salt

I have been seeing this lately. Since when did people start using ^W
instead of ^H ?
Did I miss a big revolution, or are my eyes fooling me ?

Been seeing this for several years now.  ^W in the sense that an entire
word gets deleted.

Just thought will let you know, 

There is no mention of this in the hacker's jargon file.
