The best way is to download the tar.gz or tar.bz2
mplayer files, extract them and install. While
installing, it will say "I want this package to be
already installed, ERROR" and then it will exit.
Download those packages (compressed tar) and install
them first. For to know more about installation,
configuration and codecs u just look at the README and
INSTALL files given along with mplayer installation
files.
Remember, for to have the gui support u have to use
configure --enable-gui while installing.
This is what I did, and Mplayer is playing
fantastically.
