I have installed 3.0.1 and the beta was working fine from the day it
got released till last week. I tried removing .openoffice.org3

Are you using the GNOME desktop?
Create a new user e.g. "guest", login in as guest and see if OOo works
properly.
I have had a similar problem where in OOo would not start up at all for
a particular user BUT would work fine for another user on the same
system. After much trial/error, I used a LiveCD and removed all the
GNOME related dirs and the .gvfs directory for the user who had
problems and then OOo started working fine for that user as well.
