Hi all,
I will offer a different perspective. I am not the typical LUG guy. I like
Linux but also appreciate the effort that has gone into Windows (or any
other end-user OS for that matter). What fascinates me at the end of the day
is more the business side of things. I appreciate technology but I think
more from an end-user point of view.

Trying to answer your questions below -
Lets think of the typical Linux business model. I know several companies
exist that have gone the distro route but I a sure most of the business on
the Linux end are services. When it comes down to services then it is people
that matter. In today's information age we need intelligent, knowledgeable
and versatile people and that too by the lakhs. Many say that the world is
moving to an opensource era. So Linux is an essential tool for
survival/improved prospects for the guys graduating now.
Further, if the college strives for more money, the way they can do that is
to have more students coming in and willing to pay the big bucks. And one
way to that is to get more campus recruitments happening and colleges with
an active LUG would probably appeal to corporates (especially in the Linux
domain and even otherwise) because it shows the technology maturity of the
students and indicates that they are not strait-jacketed to one technology
only. And as someone else pointed out, adoption of free software might save
them some bucks at the end of the day and they can have it maintained for
free by the LUG if it is active.
At the end of the day Linux just broadens your mind and introduces you to a
whole new vibrant and fascinating community that is willing to share and
grow together rather than a dog eat dog scenario typically found elsewhere.
HTH.
Deepak
