Highlights in Detail
==============
Xandros Linux
-------------------
Xandros Linux has been known for its excellent GUI and easy installation
alongside Windows, but was always available at a price. However, recently it
had its 'Open Circulation' edition released. The same has been bundled on
LFY CD #1. This distro installs smoothly alongside Windows, manages the
partitioning automatically, and is capable (as per Xandros release) of
installing itself even along side NTFS operating systems!
Mono
--------
Mono's Beta 3 installable (for Red Hat, Suse, Fedora, Windows) and source
code are available on LFY CD #2. Mono, a project started by the Ximian
group, is being touted as one of the best software development environments.
Its SDK allows .NET developers to develop their applications on the Linux
platform! Thus, the cost of software development for .NET framework
applications can be reduced drastically.
OM Logistics saves Rs 1 crore
-------------------------------------
In this lead feature, we share with the decision makers as to how a
logistics company, based in New Delhi went about deploying Linux for their
servers and desktops! In fact, the number of desktops they have now (running
Linux) is 540! And in this process, they have managed to save a cool Rs 1
crore! Guess, this story can inspire many of you to initiate the migration
to Linux/OSS in your respective firms.
Why do we have two versions of Linux For You now?
=================================================
Linux For You was conceived with the aim of pushing Linux from labs to
offices. To achieve this goal, we realised that we needed to reduce the
pricing of the main magazine so that those who were not technical but
curious about Linux/OSS could access the info. Hence, LINUX For You's main
magazine was created as a magazine for everyone to read.
At the same time, the demand from the tech community was clear--they needed
technical content along with CDs that bundled the latest software and
distros. Hence, the combined pack of LINUX For You and LFY PRO and the two
CDs is now available at Rs 100!
